XLR8® Gets Squashed

XLR8® Gets Squashed

The 2010 National Squash Coaching Conference took place over the weekend of March 13-14 at Squash Gym Palmerston North with a record 36 coaches attending from across New Zealand. They took part in a series of workshops forums and presentations delivered by National Coach Anthony Rickets and National Coaching Director Dave Clarke. Guest presenter was Jamie Tout from XLR8 who delivered a workshop around the development of speed and agility for squash players. The coach’s collaborative efforts and exchanging of ideas with each other over the weekend was fantastic. They also came away with a number of resources and equipment to assist them in their coaching in the future.

Of interest to the squash players amongst you, may be this article:

A couple of fast facts:

70% of first step movements in squash are forwards and 10% are lateral.
Elite players can cover more than 2km in a game, but on average 1120m.
If only to consider the rallies of the game, this is equal to 795m.
The distance covered can be 350-500m more than that of club players

The XLR8 squash workshop looked at movement patterns and the physiological effects on the athletes under pressure and fatigue. Of most interest on the day was first step quickness and reaction speed, whereby the group focused on getting the hands and feet to move together.
