XLR8® Games Day in Wellington 2008

XLR8® Games Day in Wellington 2008

Six composite teams contested the 2nd annual XLR8® Games Day in Wellington. The wind and rain stayed away but the athletes did not. With representatives from the Firebirds Cricket, Hurricanes Rugby, Pulse Netball, Team Wellington Football, the New Zealand Paralympics Team and the Black Ferns.

The Basin Reserve was in great condition for the event and a big thank you to Brett Sipthorpe and his team at Cricket Wellington for preparing the grounds and further to the staff at Cricket Wellington for their support.

On the day, the purple team a.k.a the ‘dream team’ prevailed with some great touches and impressive skills in the three disciplines on show being touch rugby, football and volleyball. Led by Victor Vito (Hurricanes), the team consisted of Josh Brodie, Dewayne Bowden (Firebirds), Aimee Sutorius (Black Ferns), Fraser Colson NZ 17’s Cricket / Football), Andre Taylor, Alby Mathewson (Hurricanes) and Jake (Team Wellington).

The athletes took the opportunity to talk about the way the season is going or for some what lays ahead for both the Hurricanes and the Pulse. Both of which looked to have been putting in some hard yards in their off seasons. It was great to see both David Smith and Faifili Levave back in the Hurricane setup and both looked very content in the vibrant environment the Canes have fostered in the past years. Cushla Lichtwark (Pulse) lived up to her reputation as one of the most competitive woman in New Zealand sport, an attribute for which she is admired across the other codes. Again it was fantastic to see such a range of athletes grace the ‘Basin’ and we would encourage any athlete who is part of a national franchise team or who have represented New Zealand at national level in open competition to get in touch with us.

Finally a thanks to SportZone (Tony Morrison – www.sportzone.org.nz) for supplying the football goals, Sergent David Forbes (NZ Army), David Walsh (WRFU Referees) and Conor Graham (Sports Training Systems - www.sts.co.nz) for officiating the games that were played in a great spirit.

All the best, The XLR8® Team
